Sharper decisions. Sounder boards. Wiser leaders.
Phronimos Exec is a practice of strategic judgment for Zimbabwe's most serious executives. We do two things — and we do them differently from every consultancy and training house in the market. We advise your boardroom when the hardest calls arrive — the ones no framework can settle. And we build the leaders your organisation will need when today's playbooks are obsolete.
Strategy & Governance, judged well
Counsel to presidents, CEOs and boards at the moments that define an institution — the decisions where strategy, politics and character all sit on one table.
See our advisoryExecutives your competitors cannot hire
Through the Institute of Strategic Judgment (ISJ) — our executive-development arm — we deliver UK-validated executive education, coaching and enterprise development that builds judgment, not just knowledge. For the leaders defining Zimbabwe's next decade.
See our programmesStrategy is wayfinding, not mapmaking.
We do not construe strategy the ordinary way.
The ordinary way treats strategy as mapmaking — a plan drawn in a boardroom, then executed against a world assumed to sit still. We treat strategy as wayfinding — the practice by which a leader navigates a moving situation, with sound judgment as instrument. No stable map. No static playbook. A discipline of reading, weighing, choosing and owning, in real time.
That discipline has a name in our work: Judgment as Comportment. It is an authored framework, worked out through doctoral research at Lancaster University. Its lineage runs through Aristotle's phronesis, Arendt's enlarged mentality, and Heidegger's being-in-the-world. Its evidence is a study of managers judging under real breakdown. Its usefulness to you is the working terms below — each teachable, each coachable, each visible in the room.
What that means for you as an executive is plain. Better calls in the moments that matter. A board that judges together rather than around each other. A strategy that moves as the terrain moves. Leaders who own what they decide.
- Comportment
- How a leader stands in a situation — attentive or complacent — before any decision is made.
- Attunement
- The mood or disposition through which a situation first becomes intelligible, before analysis begins.
- Thrownness
- The condition of being already in a situation not of one's own choosing, and having to act within it.
- Breakdown
- The moment routine competence fails and judgment alone must carry the leader through.
- Circumspection
- A practised way of seeing a situation in its full context, rather than through one model's lens alone.
- Authenticity
- Owning a judgment as genuinely one's own — not what convention, or the room, expects.
- Moral character
- Practical wisdom is inseparable from virtue. Sound judgment and good character are not two different things.
- Enlarged mentality
- Weighing a decision from every seat at the table, not from one's own view alone.
- Judging-with
- Judgment tested and refined in dialogue with others — exercised with people, never in isolation.
- Phronesis
- Practical wisdom — the capacity to see what a situation requires and act well in it, when no rule or principle alone can decide.
“Knowledge is treasure. Judgment is treasurer.”
— William Penn, 1693Codes and compliance did not prevent the boardroom failures of the past. Judgment would have.
In a wicked world, calculation fails. Judgment endures.
The hardest choices are between incommensurables — values no formula can weigh. That is precisely where judgment lives.
Compliance asks what the rule requires. Character asks what the moment demands.
The economy you steward is a wicked one.
Political conditions shift. Regulations move. Stakeholders — funders, government, communities, employees, families — pull in genuinely incompatible directions. The decisions arriving on your board table are almost never between right and wrong. They are between goods no formula can weigh: brand versus sales, growth versus prudence, opportunity versus obligation, this employee versus that community.
Every prescriptive framework — Six Sigma, Balanced Scorecard, the strategy deck — assumes a stable environment where the right tool produces the right answer. That assumption no longer holds. What you are left with, once the analysis runs out, is judgment.
That is what we build. Not by adding to your framework library, but by developing the wayfinding capacity that makes any framework useful — and that carries you through when none can.
Strategy & Corporate Governance Consultancy
We help boards and executive teams find their way through the decisions frameworks cannot decide. Not another slide deck. Not another retreat that ends in group amnesia. Counsel that lands. Judgment that carries. Strategy that moves.
For presidents, chief executives, boards and executive committees who need senior counsel on direct call. Not a training programme. A standing advisory relationship.
Standing advisory retainer — direct, ongoing access to senior counsel at the point of decision. The person on the phone is the person who wrote the strategy.
Project-based assignments — a strategic plan, a governance review, a stakeholder framework, a bid document. Scoped, priced, delivered against a defined brief.
Every engagement runs through Judgment as Comportment. That means we do not begin with a template. We begin by reading your situation — the pressures, the constraints, the pull between incommensurable goods — and we work with you until the way through is one your board can own.
When the board must decide but the situation is not yet clear
We work at the equivocal moment — the point where analysis has run out but the decision cannot wait. We help you weigh incommensurable goods honestly and reach a decision the board can own together.
When a strategy that reads well will not survive contact with your market
Strategy as wayfinding, not mapmaking. We work with you to build a strategy that moves as the market moves — grounded in your own records, tested against your own stakeholders, owned by your own executives.
When governance failed elsewhere and you refuse for it to fail here
Governance failures are failures of character and judgment, not just process. We review both — the frameworks and statutes, and the comportment of the people around the table — and rebuild both where we must.
When your stakeholder terrain is the strategy
Regulators, government, funders, communities, families — the political and institutional terrain that decides whether strategy holds. We help you weigh every seat at the table and hear what stakeholders actually mean, not only what they say.
When your board must judge together, not around each other
Facilitated executive and board retreats designed to interrogate inherited certainties rather than reinforce them. Reflexivity as discipline, not therapy.
When the submission must be forensically accurate and strategically sharp
Bid documents, regulatory submissions, formal correspondence to funders or government. The same rigour and character applied to what must be written down.
Executive Development & Capacity Building
The playbooks change. Judgment endures. ISJ, the executive-development arm of Phronimos Exec, builds the executives who will still be leading well when today's frameworks are obsolete — and the enterprises that will define what comes next. UK-validated. Delivered locally. Carried by an AI coach that stays in your pocket.
The Executive Leadership & Managerial Judgment pathway
A Level 7 executive pathway, with validation currently being worked out with a top United Kingdom university. From a 15-credit microcredential to a full Executive MBA / MSc. Delivered locally by block-release — your senior team earns a globally recognised credential without leaving the market they are meant to lead.
Executive coaching that reaches the person under the role
One-to-one and cohort coaching that develops the leader's own comportment — attunement, character, authenticity, and the reflexivity to interrogate one's own inherited assumptions rather than defend them. Not a borrowed style. A leader who is more themself, better.
Enterprise, sustainability & international market access
For the SMEs that will define Zimbabwe's recovery. We help enterprises formalise, judge their own risks honestly, and build the sustainability, investment-readiness and competitiveness to trade across SADC and the AfCFTA.
Women's & community enterprise development
Leadership, governance and investment-readiness for women entrepreneurs and community enterprises — delivered across every province, at the standard the boardroom pathway carries. No tiering by geography, no tiering by gender.
Phronimos Coach
Learning shouldn't end when the session does. Phronimos Coach is our AI-enabled companion — on any mobile phone — that supports each participant between teaching blocks. It reinforces judgment through practice, wherever a leader is and whichever province they call home. Development that does not end when the class does.

iiiThe UK standard, delivered here
Our executive pathway is progressing toward validation by a United Kingdom university. What you get: a globally recognised credential without the cost or disruption of studying abroad. Your team stays in the market they lead.
ivJudgment carried between sessions
Phronimos Coach reaches every leader, every province, every day. Development that does not end when the class does — and support that scales without diluting standards.
A consortium, not a franchise
Phronimos Exec brings together senior Zimbabwean and diaspora academics with long tenure in premier United Kingdom business schools, alongside industry executives who have led enterprises through actual Zimbabwean conditions. We came together because our country deserves counsel and capacity of the standard normally reserved for other markets. We built the practice we would want our own institutions — and our own children's employers — to work with.
The conversation begins here
Whether you sit on a board weighing a decision that will define the year, or lead an institution ready to build the capability its people deserve — we would welcome the conversation.
